Frequently Asked Questions

Powder Coating is the process of of applying a dry powdered compound that is made up of various resins, pigment, and fillers. These compounds are bonded to the metal with simple electromagnetic process during the spraying and are then fused together onto the metal during the curing process. This curing process easily exceeds 300 degrees and permanently fixes the compounds to the metal.

Due to the high temperature curing process and the specialized compounds that are fused to the metal it typically becomes extremely durable. Powder coating is more durable then liquid coating and can be made to resist corrosion, chemicals, sunlight, abrasion, and solvents. All of the powders are highly resistant to cracking and peeling and typically exceed the performance characteristics of conventional solvent based wet paint.

We can powder coat any metal object that can hold an electrostatic charge. This will allow the powder to stick to the piece during the curing process. The material also needs to be heat resistant enough to not melt at the high temperatures reached during curing process. Such materials include mild steel, electroplated and galvanized steel, stainless steel, aluminum, brass, copper, bronze, magnesium, titanium, and most steel alloys. Metals that are die cast can occasionally prove problematic due to the porous nature of the die cast metals. High quality casting do not typically cause any problems as they are usually less porous.

We have various standard powder colors in stock and ready to go. In addition, we regularly order from a number of different vendors and will order any color they have available for a customer. It does however take extra time for us to order powder, often it may take additional lead time to receive special order powders from our suppliers so please notify us in advance of your project so we can be as efficient as possible.

Yes we can! We realize that certain projects have areas that should not be painted. This may include threaded parts, or precisely drilled holes. We have high temperature tape we can used to cover things and silicone plugs that are used to fill and protect apertures as needed.

Yes! Powder coating is recognized as environmentally friendly due to the lack of solvents and other chemicals typically used in a painting application. The paint is held to the metal using electrostatic technology thus eliminating VOC emission issues.

As with any paint job, prep work is almost everything. If there is a dent or a flaw in the metal it will show in the finish. It is important to note that typical body fillers cannot be powder coated. They will not hold a charge so the powder will not adhere properly and they will melt during the curing process creating an ugly mess. If your part needs filling it can be done using brass or welding rods instead of Bondo or traditional automotive fillers.
